For the past 100 years, Associated Physicians & Surgeons has been serving the Indiana community for their primary and specialty medical needs, including the Terre Haute and Union Hospital area. With many of their buildings aging and their medical facility needs changing, Keystone Architecture was asked to provide a Master Plan for all their properties, to determine the expected life of the buildings, as well as proper utilization of space and future space needs.
After determining that several physician practices were in need of updates as well as additional space to grow, Keystone was retained to design a new facility for the Orthopedic Surgery practice. As the design moved forward, AP&S formed a partnership with Union Hospital to provide a function of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy. The result of the partnership and new facility is a first class medical office building with a functional layout designed to last many years to come.
With only eight feet of relief across the design site, Keystone was able to accomplish their needs. The main floor houses Orthopedic Surgery and Rheumatology services, along with Radiology services, Physician offices, and support facilities. The lower level contains Physical and Occupational Therapy services, the Neuro Gym, Speech Therapy services, Whirlpool and Burn Tank facility, Therapy Pool and Aquasizer. Also on the lower level is a state-of-the-art MRI unit, designed during the building construction to serve both patients and staff on both levels.
The main floor contains a dramatic 120' long skylight that runs the entire length of the main corridor leading to the physician pods, and acts as a natural means of orienting the patient within the large footprint of the building. This skylight also allows natural light to penetrate into every exam room on the floor, while maintaining patient privacy and allows both patients and staff to enjoy a bit of the outdoors, indoors as they use the building throughout the day.
